How to Memorize HSK Vocabulary

Each HSK level has an official vocabulary list, and how solidly you’ve mastered that level’s high-frequency words has a huge impact on whether you pass. Rather than memorizing words at random, the most efficient strategy is to prioritize your level’s official word list along with words that frequently appear in past exams.

Vocabulary size by level

Under the current six-level system (HSK 2.0), the vocabulary list grows cumulatively with each level.

How to prioritize which words to learn

Your target level’s official word list: Prioritize words from the official vocabulary list or a level-specific word book above all else.
Words that frequently appear in past exams: Words with a track record of actually appearing on the exam directly affect your score.
Words you personally struggle with: Focus extra attention on words you’ve had to look up or gotten wrong.

Tips for memorizing high-frequency words efficiently

Group by part of speech or theme: Grouping words into categories like “verbs” or “time expressions” makes them easier to remember.
Learn with example sentences and collocations: Learning how a word is actually used sticks better for the exam than memorizing it in isolation.
