How Long Does It Take to Pass HSK 4? — A Self-Study Plan
HSK 4 is a popular intermediate milestone — a useful résumé credential, and a solid base before pushing toward the Level 5–6 that universities and employers in China often look for. Here’s how long it typically takes to get there through self-study, broken down by your starting point and daily study time, plus a plan worked backwards from the exam.

How long does it take? (rough guide)
HSK 4 covers a cumulative vocabulary of about 1,200 words (roughly 600 more on top of the ~600 words through Level 3). Typical time to get there:

A plan worked backwards from the exam
Working back from a pass, there are really just four jobs.
1. Build a pronunciation base (first 2–3 weeks)
Listening carries real weight even at Level 4, so getting pinyin and tones solid first is the fastest route in the long run. If this is shaky, you’ll learn words but fail to hear them.
2. Build vocabulary up to ~1,200 words (the main job)

3. Get comfortable with complex sentences
Level 4 introduces more multi-clause sentences using connectives such as 因为(yīnwèi)…所以(suǒyǐ) (“because…so”) and 虽然(suīrán)…但是(dànshì) (“although…but”). Typical Level 4 words like 差不多(chàbuduō) (“about the same”) and 麻烦(máfan) (“troublesome”) stick better inside full sentences. Build on the basics of word order and review the high-frequency patterns.
4. Drill past papers (1–2 months before the exam)
- Time yourself: listening plays only once, so get used to the real pace.
- Analyze your mistakes: was it vocabulary, grammar, or listening? Target your weak points.
- Repeat: doing the same paper several times cements the patterns.
Common sticking points
- The vocabulary wall: Level 4 is largely decided by vocabulary. A little every day wins.
- Listening speed: the audio won’t wait. Expose yourself to Chinese sound daily.
- Feeling buried: favor one full pass over perfectionism; it sticks as you cycle through.

When a word stumps you in a past paper or textbook, look it up on the spot and file it for later. Keep a running “words I don’t know yet” list and cycle back through it — reviewing at spaced intervals is what turns ~1,200 words into words you actually own.
