Chinese Interviews and Self-Introduction

Pletec LLC Editorial Team ·

An interview in Chinese rewards concreteness. Adjectives about yourself — hard-working, responsible, motivated — sound the same from every candidate and are hard to make convincing in a second language. Experience, responsibility, one example: that sequence is easy to say, easy to follow, and gives the interviewer an obvious follow-up question.

The self-introduction

ChinesePinyinMeaning
Nín hǎo, wǒ jiào…Hello, my name is …
Wǒ xiànzài zài … gōngzuò.I currently work at …
Wǒ zhǔyào fùzé…I am mainly responsible for …
Wǒ yǒu sān nián de xiāngguān jīngyàn.I have three years of relevant experience.
Hěn gāoxìng yǒu zhège jīhuì.I am glad to have this opportunity.

Keep the introduction to about thirty seconds: name, current role, main responsibility, why this position. (Qǐng jièshào yíxià nǐ zìjǐ), and a compact answer signals that you can organize information — which is itself part of what is being assessed.

主要 (zhǔyào), “mainly”, is doing useful work here: it tells the interviewer that what follows is the core of the job, not a complete list, so you are not obliged to enumerate everything.

Talking about experience

Interviewer:
(Qǐng jièshào yíxià nǐ de xiāngguān jīngyàn.)
Candidate:
(Wǒ yǒu sān nián de xiāngguān jīngyàn, yě fùzé guo zhège xiàngmù.)
Interviewer:
(Nàge xiàngmù de jiéguǒ zěnmeyàng?)
Candidate:
(Wǒmen tíqián liǎng zhōu wánchéng le, kèhù yě jìxù gēn wǒmen hézuò.)

The particle (guo) after a verb marks past experience — that you have done something at least once — which is exactly the aspect an interview asks about. 负责过 (fùzé guo) is “have been responsible for”; 做过 (zuò guo), “have done”; 用过 (yòng guo), “have used”. It is different from (le), which reports a completed event rather than accumulated experience.

Give one result per claim. 提前两周完成 (tíqián liǎng zhōu wánchéng), “finished two weeks early”, is a fact an interviewer can ask about; 我很努力 (wǒ hěn nǔlì), “I work hard”, is not.

Strengths and weaknesses

ChinesePinyinMeaning
Wǒ zuòshì bǐjiào rènzhēn.I am fairly thorough in my work.
Wǒ xíguàn tíqián gōutōng jìndù.I make a habit of reporting progress early.
Wǒ zài xuéxí…I am currently learning …
Zhè fāngmiàn wǒ hái xūyào tígāo.I still need to improve in this area.

Interviewer:
(Nǐ juéde zìjǐ de yōudiǎn shì shénme?)
Candidate:
(Wǒ zuòshì bǐjiào rènzhēn, yě xíguàn tíqián gōutōng jìndù.)
Interviewer:
(Néng jǔ ge lìzi ma?)
(Shàng ge xiàngmù chūxiàn fēngxiǎn de shíhou, wǒ tíqián yì zhōu gàosu le fùzérén.)

比较 (bǐjiào) before an adjective means “fairly” or “relatively”, and it is close to obligatory when describing your own strengths. Chinese self-description without a hedge — 我很认真 (wǒ hěn rènzhēn) — can sound like boasting; 比较认真 (bǐjiào rènzhēn) makes the same claim at an acceptable volume.

For a weakness, name something real and pair it with what you are doing about it: 这方面我还需要提高现在在学… (Zhè fāngmiàn wǒ hái xūyào tígāo, xiànzài zài xué…). (hái), “still”, frames the gap as in progress rather than fixed.

Asking your own question

ChinesePinyinMeaning
Wǒ xiǎng liǎojiě yíxià zhège zhíwèi de zhǔyào gōngzuò.I would like to understand the main duties of this role.
Tuánduì dàgài yǒu duōshao rén?About how many people are in the team?
Rùzhí hòu qián sān ge yuè de zhòngdiǎn shì shénme? What is the focus of the first three months?
Shénme shíhou kěyǐ zhīdào jiéguǒ?When will I hear the outcome?

Prepare one sincere question about the work itself. (Wǒ xiǎng liǎojiě yíxià), “I would like to understand”, is a softer and more natural opener than a bare question, and it signals interest in the role rather than in the offer.

When you do not understand a question

(Bù hǎoyìsi, zhège wèntí wǒ bú tài míngbai, kěyǐ zài shuō yí biàn ma?)
Interviewer:
(Wǒ shì xiǎng wèn, nǐ wèishénme xiǎng huàn gōngzuò?)

Asking once, clearly and early, costs almost nothing; answering the wrong question at length costs a great deal. Interviewers routinely rephrase, and doing so is not read as a failure of ability. More ways to buy time and get a repeat are in clarification.

Takeaway

  • Structure every answer as experience → responsibility → one concrete example.
  • Use (guo) for past experience and a number for the result.
  • Hedge self-description with 比较 (bǐjiào); frame a weakness with (hái) plus what you are doing about it.
  • Prepare one question about the work, and one sentence for asking the interviewer to repeat.

(Wǒ yǒu sān nián de xiāngguān jīngyàn. Wǒ de yōudiǎn shì yǒu zérèngǎn.)

Practical note for this chapter

Move beyond set situations: opinions, negotiation, professional presentation and regional nuance. In this chapter, practice giving a short response and then checking what matters.

Use it in context

(Qǐng jièshào yíxià nín de xiāngguān jīngyàn.)

(Wǒ yǒu sān nián de xiāngguān jīngyàn. Wǒ de yōudiǎn shì yǒu zérèngǎn.)

Central response
(Wǒ yǒu sān nián de xiāngguān jīngyàn. Wǒ de yōudiǎn shì yǒu zérèngǎn.)
Another natural way to say it
(Wǒ yǒu sān nián de xiāngguān jīngyàn, yě fùzé guo zhège xiàngmù.)
Use this variation in a situation you genuinely expect to handle.
How to use it
Listen to the model once, then say it again with one detail from your own situation.

Turn the model into three conversation turns

(Qǐng jièshào yíxià nín de xiāngguān jīngyàn.)
(Wǒ yǒu sān nián de xiāngguān jīngyàn. Wǒ de yōudiǎn shì yǒu zérèngǎn.)
(Wǒ yǒu sān nián de xiāngguān jīngyàn, yě fùzé guo zhège xiàngmù.)

Before acting, check the point most likely to cause a misunderstanding. This dialogue is for practice. For important decisions, confirm official guidance as well.

A useful variation

Keep the same purpose, then change the person, time or place to make it your own.

(Wǒ yǒu sān nián de xiāngguān jīngyàn, yě fùzé guo zhège xiàngmù.)

Use this variation in a situation you genuinely expect to handle.

Listen to the model once, then say it again with one detail from your own situation.

A common trap

For important details, do not decide from what you think you heard; check written information when needed.

(Zìwǒ jièshào yào gěi jùtǐ jīnglì, bù zhǐ shuō “wǒ hěn nǔlì”.)

This dialogue is for practice. For important decisions, confirm official guidance as well.

Three-step practice

  2. Say the central response
  3. Add one detail of your own
