Giving Opinions in Chinese — Agree, Disagree and Suggest

Pletec LLC Editorial Team ·

In Chinese, soften disagreement by naming it as a different idea, then give one reason or alternative.

Colleague:
(Wǒ juéde zhège bànfǎ bú cuò. Nǐ juéde ne?)
Learner:
(Wǒ yǒu yìdiǎn bùtóng de xiǎngfa, yīnwèi shíjiān bú gòu.)
Colleague:
(Nà nǐ yǒu shénme jiànyì?)

Conversation: agree with one reservation

(Wǒmen jiù yòng zhège fāng’àn ba.)
(Wǒ jīběn tóngyì, búguò yùsuàn xūyào zài quèrèn yíxià.)
(Hǎo, wǒ lái quèrèn yùsuàn.)

Takeaway

  • 我觉得 (wǒ juéde) introduces an opinion.
  • A reason or alternative keeps disagreement collaborative.

Distinguish agreement from commitment

(Wǒ jīběn tóngyì, búguò…) lets you support the direction while identifying one point that still needs work. Follow it with a concrete concern—cost, timing, evidence, or responsibility—so the conversation has somewhere useful to go.

Related: connecting ideas links your points together, and polite refusal and negotiation handles disagreement without friction.

By the end of this chapter, you can say

(Wǒ juéde zhège bànfǎ bú cuò, yīnwèi kěyǐ jiéshěng shíjiān.)

Practical note for this chapter

Move beyond set situations: opinions, negotiation, professional presentation and regional nuance. In this chapter, practice giving a short response and then checking what matters.

Use it in context

(Nǐ duì zhège bànfǎ yǒu shénme kànfǎ?)

(Wǒ juéde zhège bànfǎ bú cuò, yīnwèi kěyǐ jiéshěng shíjiān.)

(Nǐ duì zhège bànfǎ yǒu shénme kànfǎ?)
Central response
(Wǒ juéde zhège bànfǎ bú cuò, yīnwèi kěyǐ jiéshěng shíjiān.)
Another natural way to say it
(Wǒ yǒu yìdiǎn bù tóng de xiǎngfǎ, yīnwèi shíjiān bú gòu.)
Use this variation in a situation you genuinely expect to handle.
How to use it
Listen to the model once, then say it again with one detail from your own situation.

Turn the model into three conversation turns

(Nǐ duì zhège bànfǎ yǒu shénme kànfǎ?)
(Wǒ juéde zhège bànfǎ bú cuò, yīnwèi kěyǐ jiéshěng shíjiān.)
(Wǒ yǒu yìdiǎn bù tóng de xiǎngfǎ, yīnwèi shíjiān bú gòu.)

Before acting, check the point most likely to cause a misunderstanding. This dialogue is for practice. For important decisions, confirm official guidance as well.

A useful variation

Keep the same purpose, then change the person, time or place to make it your own.

(Wǒ yǒu yìdiǎn bù tóng de xiǎngfǎ, yīnwèi shíjiān bú gòu.)

Use this variation in a situation you genuinely expect to handle.

Listen to the model once, then say it again with one detail from your own situation.

A common trap

For important details, do not decide from what you think you heard; check written information when needed.

(Bù tóngyì shí jiā lǐyóu huò tìdài fāng àn, bù zhǐ shuō fǎnduì.)

This dialogue is for practice. For important decisions, confirm official guidance as well.

Three-step practice

  1. Open the situation in one short phrase
  2. Say the central response
  3. Add one detail of your own
