Discussing News and Social Topics in Chinese

News can be interesting conversation, but it can also be sensitive. Start with what you know, label your opinion as an opinion, and do not ask people to speak for a whole country or group.

Conversation: a careful opening

A: 我看到一个报道说这个政策要调整。
(Wǒ kàndào yí ge bàodào shuō zhège zhèngcè yào tiáozhěng.)
B: 是吗？我还没仔细了解。你在哪里看到的？
(Shì ma? Wǒ hái méi zǐxì liǎojiě. Nǐ zài nǎlǐ kàndào de?)

Asking for the source is normal and useful. It is better than repeating a claim you cannot verify.

Conversation: disagree without a fight

A: 我个人觉得这样比较方便。
(Wǒ gèrén juéde zhèyàng bǐjiào fāngbiàn.)
B: 我明白你的意思，不过我比较担心成本。
(Wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi, búguò wǒ bǐjiào dānxīn chéngběn.)

我明白你的意思，不过… (Wǒ míngbai nǐ de yìsi, búguò…) recognizes the point before naming your concern. It is not agreement; it is a bridge.

Boundaries matter

If someone does not want to discuss a topic, move on: 这个话题我们以后再聊吧。 (Zhège huàtí wǒmen yǐhòu zài liáo ba.)
