Old HSK vs. 6-Level HSK vs. HSK 3.0
The HSK has gone through several revisions, so terms like “old HSK”, “6-level HSK” and “HSK 3.0” often get mixed up. Learners can still encounter materials organized around Levels 1-6 alongside information about HSK 3.0, with three bands and nine levels. The important step is to confirm which version your test center or institution requires.
Three generations of HSK

“New HSK” can mean different things depending on the source, so check the date and the exam version before choosing materials.
The 6-level HSK
In the 6-level HSK, the higher the number, the harder it is. Rough vocabulary targets:

What is the new HSK 3.0 (9 levels)?
HSK 3.0 uses a “three bands, nine levels” structure. Three points stand out:
- Nine levels: three bands (elementary, intermediate, advanced), each with three levels, adding new levels 7–9 (advanced).
- Its own, much larger word list: levels 1–6 alone specify 5,400 words in the official HSK 3.0 syllabus (300 / 200 / 500 / 1,000 / 1,600 / 1,800 added at each level, i.e. 2,000 words cumulatively by the end of level 4), with a further band of vocabulary for levels 7–9 on top. - Translation at the top: levels 7–9 also assess translation and interpretation skills.
The level numbers do not carry over between versions. A “Level 4” in the 6-level HSK and a “Level 4” in HSK 3.0 are defined by different syllabuses with different word lists, so you cannot substitute HSK 3.0 material to prepare for a 6-level HSK exam — or the other way round. Match your material to the exam you are actually sitting.
Availability today
You may see both 6-level materials and HSK 3.0 information in search results, books, and course descriptions. If you plan to take the test for a deadline, follow the requirement from the test center, university, employer, scholarship, or application document.
