HSK vs. TOCFL — Which Chinese Proficiency Test Should You Take?
If you want an official qualification that proves your Chinese, two standardized tests dominate: the HSK and the TOCFL. They test the same language, but they come from different places and suit different goals. Here’s how they differ and how to choose.

The HSK has the larger international footprint — more test centers in more countries — and is the qualification mainland Chinese universities and scholarship programs (such as the Chinese Government Scholarship) ask for. The TOCFL is the reference test for studying in Taiwan and for Taiwan’s scholarship programs.
The biggest practical difference: characters
- HSK is built around simplified characters (简体字, jiǎntǐzì), used in mainland China and Singapore.
- TOCFL is built around traditional characters (繁體字 / 繁体字, fántǐzì), used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau — though it also offers a simplified-character version of the test.
Choose the test whose character set matches where you plan to live, study, or work. This is usually the deciding factor.
Level systems
- HSK: you may see materials for Levels 1-6 and information about HSK 3.0 with three bands and nine levels. Higher numbers are harder within each system.
- TOCFL: 6 levels grouped into three bands — Band A (Levels 1–2), Band B (Levels 3–4), and Band C (Levels 5–6) — explicitly mapped to the CEFR scale (A1 through C2).
Because the TOCFL is aligned to the CEFR, it’s easy to line up against other European language qualifications. The HSK is sometimes informally mapped to the CEFR too, but the alignment is looser and debated.
Which one should you take?
- Planning to study, work, or live in mainland China → the HSK (simplified characters, and the qualification institutions there expect).
- Focused on Taiwan → the TOCFL (traditional characters, and the test recognized locally).
- Learning traditional characters, or want a clear CEFR mapping → the TOCFL.
- Not sure yet → the HSK is a reasonable default: it’s the most widely offered and gives clear, globally recognized goals to work toward.
