Chinese grammar reading workshop

Read the pattern, cover the translation, and rebuild the sentence from its meaning. Return to the detailed articles for exceptions and nuance.

For English speakers, the main adjustment is not basic SVO order but keeping time, place, aspect markers, and complements in their Chinese positions.

Score one point for each answer you can produce without looking. 20–24: ready for lower-intermediate work; 14–19: revisit the marked units; below 14: repeat Units 1–12 aloud.

  1. 我昨天在书店买的那本书很好看。

Wǒ zuó tiān zài shū diàn mǎi de nà běn shū hěn hǎo kàn.

    我昨天在书店买的|那本书|很好看

    Model and reason

的 attaches a modifier to a noun, 地 marks the manner before a verb in formal writing, and 得 introduces a complement after a verb. First decide what is being modified.

Expand one noun, one action, and one result with the right marker.

    Unit 6: Modifiers: 的, 地, and 得
  2. 虽然今天下雨,但是我们还是去了公园。

Suī rán jīn tiān xià yǔ, dàn shì wǒ men hái shi qù le gōng yuán.

    虽然今天下雨|但是|我们还是去了公园

    Model and reason

Because–therefore, although–but, and if–then pairs make the relationship visible. Do not use both halves mechanically when context already makes one clear.

Join four short facts into two cause, contrast, and condition sentences.

Unit 19: Connectors and logical flow
  3. 老师明天会在教室里给我们讲这个问题。

Lǎo shī míng tiān huì zài jiào shì lǐ gěi wǒ men jiǎng zhè ge wèn tí.

    老师|明天|会|在教室里|给我们|讲|这个问题

    Model and reason

Words such as 在, 从, 到, 给, 跟, and 对 introduce the setting, path, recipient, companion, or viewpoint before the main verb. Read them as a relationship, not as isolated translations.

Say who you go with, where you come from, and whom you speak to.

Unit 17: Coverbs: paths, recipients, and viewpoint
  4. 他终于找到了昨天丢的钥匙。

Tā zhōng yú zhǎo dào le zuó tiān diū de yào shi.

    他|终于|找到了|昨天丢的钥匙

    Model and reason

A complement tells whether an action succeeded, finished, found something, or moved in a direction. It is part of the verb phrase, so keep it next to the verb.

Turn 看, 写, 找, and 拿 into completed or directional actions.

Unit 13: Result and directional complements
  5. 请把我昨天放在桌子上的文件拿过来。

Qǐng bǎ wǒ zuó tiān fàng zài zhuō zi shàng de wén jiàn ná guò lái.

    请|把|我昨天放在桌子上的文件|拿过来

    Model and reason

把 brings a definite, affected object before the verb and normally requires a result, location, quantity, or other outcome. It is not a decorative replacement for normal order.

Give three practical instructions with a visible result.

    Unit 15: 把: handling a known object
  6. 如果你看完了这本书,就给我打电话。

Rú guǒ nǐ kàn wán le zhè běn shū, jiù gěi wǒ dǎ diàn huà.

    如果|你|看完了|这本书|就|给我打电话

    Model and reason

Because–therefore, although–but, and if–then pairs make the relationship visible. Do not use both halves mechanically when context already makes one clear.

Join four short facts into two cause, contrast, and condition sentences.

Unit 19: Connectors and logical flow
  7. 我的自行车被朋友借走了,所以我坐地铁上班。

Wǒ de zì xíng chē bèi péng you jiè zǒu le, suǒ yǐ wǒ zuò dì tiě shàng bān.

    我的自行车|被朋友借走了|所以|我|坐地铁|上班

    Model and reason

被 foregrounds the person or thing affected, often when the result matters or is unwelcome. Chinese also frequently leaves the agent unstated.

Describe something that was lost, borrowed, or solved.

Unit 16: 被: affected subject and passive meaning
  8. 虽然他已经学了两年中文,但是说得不太快。

Suī rán tā yǐ jīng xué le liǎng nián zhōng wén, dàn shì shuō de bù tài kuài.

    虽然|他|已经学了两年中文|但是|说得不太快

    Model and reason

Duration answers “for how long”, frequency answers “how often”, and number of times answers “how many times”. Their positions depend on whether the object is definite.

Describe one habit and one finished activity with duration.

Unit 14: Duration, frequency, and repetition
